Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Flap Brush Benefits of Brush Media

A versatile, high-performance alternative to bristle brushes, the Scotch-Brite™ Premium Finishing Flap Brush supports critical metal prep and finishing operations efficiently and effectively. This flap brush requires no compounds or coolant to achieve fine finishes. Inherently less technique dependent than buffing compound processes, a flap brush provides more contact with the work surface, achieving finishes with fewer steps and more consistent results. Moreover, because it's constructed of non-woven material rather than wire or fiber bristles, it poses no danger to the operator from flying wire fragment during use. The flexibility of the flap brush enables access to hard-to-reach surface areas and can reach into surface irregularities that flat belts, for instance, miss. 

Variety of Configurations

This brush is available in softer (5) density aluminum oxide mineral in medium and very fine grades and silicon carbide in medium grades. In harder (7) densities, the brush is produced with aluminum oxide available in very fine and medium grades and with medium grade silicon carbide. 

Premium for Aesthetic Finishes

Among the best for achieving aesthetic finishes in the metal fabrication industries, this brush is well suited for generating #4 finishes on stainless steel sheet. It is used effectively in flat finishing, automotive trim, machine parts, metal fabrication parts and decorative finishes.

Scotch-Brite™ Combi-S Wheel is a unique finishing wheel composed of alternating Scotch-Brite™ non-woven flaps and aluminum oxide coated abrasive sheet. Conformable pads provide a large footprint and cushion the abrasive sheets to create a brushed, decorative finish.

Our Scotch-Brite™ Conformable Applicator Cleaner Head 261 helps operators and cleaning crews achieve cleanliness in work spaces and on workpieces. This cleaner head is lightweight and has a flexible, concave head for greater conformability on curved work surfaces.

Time to Clean

Cleaner head 261 is used with 6" x 12" non-woven surface conditioning products, such as Scotch-Brite™ airplane cleaner pads. It has a swivel attachment which accepts a standard threaded broom handle. The swivel attachment enables the pad to twist, turn and rotate for greater surface accommodation; it also enables users to better manipulate the pad. 

Easy Cleaner Pad Attachment

Four nylon flaps on the bottom of the cleaner head have a 3M™ Hookit™ Tall J Hook type attachment. The Velcro-like hooks enable users to easily fasten a cleaning pad to the head. By simply applying a little pressure, the pad latches on to the J hooks for secure attachment. 
3M™ has engineered the cleaner head to be lightweight and flexible. Its flexibility is further enhanced by its concave shape. When light pressure is applied, the curved head flattens and splays out, so users may cover more surface area, particularly on curved surfaces. The head responds to manual pressure, so the user has precise control over the surface area that is being cleaned. 

Flexible, Lightweight and Portable

Anatomy of Flap Brushes

We engineer the Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Flap Brush Steel Core by taking sections of non-woven material, slit lengthwise, and bonding it to a cylindrical steel core. The steel core helps prevent the brush from yielding or deflecting when it makes contact with the substrate — so you get consistent cutting action. Among our Scotch-Brite™ Flap and Cleaning Brushes, the High Strength Flap Brush provides a low to medium aggressive cut but has more durable open web.

As operators know well, many factors go into pairing the right abrasive with a workpiece. Our Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Flap Brush is good for medium-duty cleaning and finishing applications, because it is long-lasting and withstands repeated wear. Yet, it is not so aggressive that it will gouge the workpiece. Instead, the medium grade aluminum oxide mineral cuts softly and leaves a fine scratch pattern.

As it spins, flaps rotate centrifugally and make continuous contact with the workpiece. By lapping the surface, the flaps eliminate the residual traces or marks that tend to be left by singular discs or discs ganged on a shaft. The brush may be used with a variety of tools, including backstand, match and finish sander and a centerless grinder. 

Available in a Variety of Grades

Our Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Premium Blend and Finish Flap Brush combines aluminum oxide mineral and non-woven nylon fibers using resin. The mineral is available in a variety of grades, so operators may choose the right grade for their particular application. Grades include: CRS, MED and VFN. Typically, a coarser grade is desirable when operators seek a more aggressive cut. Contrarily, a very fine grade is desirable when a softer scratch is desirable. We also offer this brush in Type L (Lofty) for the coarse and medium grades, for greater conformability.

Independent of the grade chosen, operators will get the same level of consistency and responsiveness they've come to expect from Scotch-Brite™ abrasives. Each brush offers unique cleaning or finishing capabilities based on different grade and density combinations.

Common Applications

Our High Strength Premium Blend and Finish Flap Brush helps with blending finishes, deburring and antique finishing on hardware and plumbing fixtures. 

Scotch-Brite™ Flap Brushes are used by manufacturers of hand tools, surgical equipment, stamped metal parts, transportation vehicles, builders hardware, plastic products, mouldings and woodworking products. Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Flap Brush Steel Core is constructed from sections of non-woven material slit lengthwise and bonded to a cylindrical core. Our long-lasting brush provides improved consistency and greater control over a number of critical prep and finishing tasks, including polishing and aesthetic finishing, and brushed metal finishes on copper, brass, stainless steel, aluminum and other metals. As the brush spins, the flaps rotate centrifugally to cover more surface area. They minimize the risk of chatter, because the flaps overlap areas as they cut, reducing the residual lines and traces that may be left by abrasive discs ganged on a shaft. The steel core helps to provide a firm foundation and prevents it from yielding or deflection on the workpiece when run.

Available in a Variety of Grades and Minerals

This brush is available in a variety of grades and minerals, which means operators have the ability to choose the right combination for their unique project. Minerals include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide and talc. Grades include very fine (VFN), ultra fine (ULF), fine (FIN), medium (MED) and coarse (CRS). Aluminum oxide is soft and versatile; it tends to be used on surfaces where smooth, soft finishes are desirable. Talc, likewise, is a very soft mineral providing minimal abrasive qualities for ultra fine finishing and polishing. Silicon carbide is sharper and harder, making it a good match for projects that require an aggressive cut or a different aesthetic look.

Our Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Flap Brush is uniquely designed for lighter duty and specialty applications, such as cleaning and finishing.

Anatomy of Flap Brushes

We engineer the Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Flap Brush by taking sections of non-woven material, slit lengthwise, and bonding it to a cylindrical fiberglass core. Among our Scotch-Brite™ Flap and Cleaning Brushes, the High Strength Flap Brush provides a low to medium aggressive cut but has more durable open web. 

As operators know well, many factors go into pairing the right abrasive with a workpiece. Our Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Flap Brush is good for light-duty cleaning and finishing applications, because it is long-lasting and withstands repeated wear. Yet, it is not so aggressive that it will gouge the workpiece. Instead, aluminum oxide mineral cuts softly and leaves a fine scratch pattern.

Overall, flap brushes minimize the risk for chatter and marks given their unique construction. Under normal use, flaps rotate centrifugally and make continuous contact with the workpiece. By lapping the surface, the flaps eliminate the residual traces or marks that tend to be left by singular discs or discs ganged on a shaft. The brush may be used with a variety of tools, including a backstand, match and finish sander and a centerless grinder. 

Operators will get the consistency and responsiveness they've come to expect from Scotch-Brite™ abrasives, but each brush offers unique capabilities based on different grade and density combinations. Our High Strength Flap Brush is available in a range of grades, densities and sizes (PDF, 2.7 Mb) — so operators can choose the right brush for their specific application.

Scotch-Brite™ Combi-R Wheel is a unique finishing wheel composed of alternating Scotch-Brite™ non-woven flaps and aluminum oxide coated abrasive sheet. Recommended Applications

Among our Scotch-Brite™ Flap and Cleaning Brushes, the Scotch-Brite™ High Strength Bonded Cleaning Brush falls right in the middle in terms of its aggressiveness. Typical applications include medium-duty cleaning and polishing of sheet or coil stock, removing light oxides and contaminants and deburring stamped laser cut parts. Advantages of a Pleated Design

Scotch-Brite™ Satin Pleated Buff Wheel was designed with pleated nonwoven flaps attached to a steel or fiberglass core in a wave-like pattern. It can lightly finish, deburr and blend on most metals. The benefits of a pleated design are twofold. First, the spacing between the pleated layers ventilates the abrasive as it finishes. Air circulates between the layers, helping the abrasive run cool. Second, the wavy pattern decreases the potential for streaks. Other stacked discs have a slight gap between them, but the springy layers of pleated abrasive curve and undulate to ensue no gaps. Lines or traces that may result from stacked discs are eliminated.

The fibrous layers on the wheel respond to surface irregularities and conform to contours — to help maintain part geometry. Available in fine (FIN) or very fine (VFN) grades, the Scotch-Brite™ Satin Pleated Buff Wheel will deliver a fine satin finish on most metals and is commonly used on builder's hardware, such as faucet fixtures.

3M™ Finesse-it™ Roloc™ Finishing Disc Pad is made with soft foam to provide greater conformability than standard 3M™ Roloc™ backup pads. Runs Smoother, Grinds Faster

Used with 3M™ Green Corp Flexible Grinding Wheels, the 3M™ Flexible Grinding Wheel Backup Pads provide uniform support and increased cut uniformity on contoured surfaces. Together they achieve high stock removal rate with minimal noise and vibration and can be used in edge beveling, chamfering, gate removal, and plate grinding. The backup pad is required for safe operation of flexible grinding wheels. Both pads feature a standard 7/8 inch diameter center hole.

Less Vibration, Reduced Chatter

This clear, flexible pad distributes pressure evenly over the work surface and cushions the abrasive action. Depressed center wheels may also be referred to as raised hub wheels or by their shape designation of “Type”, with Type 27 being the most popular. Our 3M™ Hookit™ Sheet Pad was made to optimize the results you get when finishing flat surfaces, edges, corners and angles with a 3M™ Orbital Sander. It is a perfect mate for our rectangular 3M™ Orbital Sander PN 20331 and Hookit™ abrasive sheets. The 1/2-inch, medium density red foam pad provides conformability for the latter stages of surface sanding. Use this foam pad with an orbital sander at a maximum speed of 10,000 OPM.

The 3M™ Hookit™ attachment system allows you to easily attach, detach and reattach the abrasive, thus utilizing the entire life of the sheet, resulting in longer use and less waste.

Back-up Pads: 3M™ Dual Lock PSA Soft Disc Pad 20247, 1-1/4 in, 20 per case

This disc pad attaches to the PN20246 Dual Lock Rubber Skirt. The Dual Lock hooks provide a secure attachment even in extreme wet applications. The pad has a blue vinyl face to hold the 466LA PSA backed abrasive discs.

Solid, but Soft, Support

Ideally suited for high-volume production environments, 3M™ Dual Lock™ PSA Soft Disc Pad PN 20247 provides a secure, conformable backup to Trizact microfinishing discs to remove minor defects like nibs, scratches, marks, and blemishes in clear coat.

Extreme wet sanding applications – in which the abrasive, pad and tool are continuously subjected to water – can test the limits of any attachment method so this dual lock disc pad system was developed to provide a pad attachment strong enough to withstand the demands of a heavy-duty industrial wet sanding application.

Solving the Attachment Challenge

The Dual Lock™ snap-locking system has holding power 5 times stronger than conventional hook and loop. Interlocking mushroom-shaped stems "snap" together and provide a definite tactile response. When two pieces of Dual Lock™ fasteners are pressed together, the stems flex and the mushroom heads slide past each other. After passing the opposing mating piece, the stems snap back into their original position and the opposing mushroom heads interlock. These fasteners provide high tensile strength but can be opened by simply cleaving or peeling open the closure. The Dual Lock fastening system is durable enough to be opened and closed 1,000 times before losing 50% of its original strength.

The 3M™ Hookit™ Low Profile Finishing Disc Pad is a soft density backup pad in 5 or 6-inch diameters for 5- and 6-inch abrasive discs. The soft density foam provides additional conformability and is ideal for final surface finishing applications following leveling and blending process steps.

The 3M™ Hookit™ hook-and-loop feature makes disc attachment, removal, and re-attachment easy and facilitates use and re-use of the disc for the extent of the abrasive life. Hookit™ disc pads have J-shaped hooks of the type most commonly used in everyday hook-and-loop applications. Hookit™ disc pads grip the brushed nylon loop backings of Hookit™ discs and provide a finer finish than do adhesive backed discs. The Hookit system is designed for work spaces where adhesive backed discs may become contaminated by dust, dirt, or flying debris. This disc pad can also be used with hook-and-loop discs from other manufacturers.

3M™ Disc Pad Hub and Retainer Nut attach fiber discs to tools with M14-2 threaded spindles found on sanders and grinders typically sold in Europe. The disc pad hub has an M14-2 internal threaded metal insert that fits an M14-2 threaded spindle (where the spindle is 14 millimeters in diameter with 2 millimeter pitch).

The Flexibility to Choose: Face Plate Attachments

Our 3M™ Disc Pad Hub enables operators to select face plates with four different levels of flexibility (soft, medium, hard and extra-hard). The disc pad hub holds a face plate firmly in position, and a center hole fiber disc is secured to the tool spindle with the retainer nut.

Runs Smoother, Grinds Faster

Used with 3M™ Green Corp Flexible Grinding Wheels, the 3M™ Flexible Grinding Wheel Backup Pads provide uniform support and increased cut uniformity on contoured surfaces. Together they achieve high stock removal rate with minimal noise and vibration and can be used in edge beveling, chamfering, gate removal, and plate grinding. The backup pad is required for safe operation of flexible grinding wheels. Both pads feature a standard 7/8 inch diameter center hole.

Less Vibration, Reduced Chatter

This clear, flexible pad distributes pressure evenly over the work surface and cushions the abrasive action. The ease of use, lower vibration levels and reduced chatter resulting from the flexibility of the abrasive means it produces a better finish which is more easily blended. Less vibration and chatter serves to extend abrasive life, as well, and make for greater operator comfort.

The 3M™ Green Corps™ Flexible Grinding Wheel is a Type 27 depressed center, bonded wheel that offers enhanced flexibility to conform to contours, helping operators achieve a smoother finish on a variety of metals.

Depressed center wheels may also be referred to as raised hub wheels or by their shape designation of “Type”, with Type 27 being the most popular. The depressed center design allows the attachment mechanism to recess within the wheel so that it can be used for various grinding and cutting applications. Our Scotch-Brite™ Hookit™ Conversion Face facilitates the connection of Scotch-Brite™ non-woven discs (sold separately) to Hookit™ Back Up Pads, so operators can utilize a single back up pad/tool system for both non-woven and coated abrasive products.

Conversion Face Method of Operation

The conversion face has a high loft black brushed nylon loop backing to firmly attach to 3M™ Hookit™ Back Up Pads (sold separately) or as provided with 3M™ Orbital and Random Orbital Sanders. The hook side of the conversion face has small, white mushroom headed hooks which go through the web of the Scotch Brite™ 7447 Pro & 7448 Pro Discs (sold separately) and most other 3M™ Scotch Brite™ non-woven products. Scotch-Brite™ Hookit™ Conversion Face comes in several sizes to accommodate varying sizes of Hookit™ Back Up Pads. To use coated abrasive products, simply remove the conversion face from the back up pad and attach an appropriate Hookit™ disc.

The 3M™ Hookit™ hook-and-loop feature makes disc attachment, removal, and re-attachment easy and facilitates use and re-use of the disc for the extent of the abrasive life. Hookit™ disc pads have J-shaped hooks of the type most commonly used in everyday hook-and-loop applications. Hookit disc pads grip the brushed nylon loop backings of 3M™ Hookit™ discs and provide a finer finish than do adhesive backed discs. The Hookit system is designed for work spaces where adhesive backed discs may become contaminated by dust, dirt, or flying debris. This disc pad can also be used with hook-and-loop discs from other manufacturers.

3M™ Hook and Loop Disc Pad Holders have a center hole with internal threads—choose the thread size that matches the external thread size of your right angle grinder. T-shaped hooks securely hold a surface conditioning disc and provide quick and easy disc attachment, removal, and re-attachment. The hook-and-loop feature enables the disc to be used and re-used for the extent of the abrasive life. Discs are sold separately.

Securely Mount Type 27 Flap Discs and Wheels to Power Tools

3M™ Flap Disc Holder includes all the necessary components to make abrasive-to-tool attachment secure: spacers, flanges, retainer nut, and an Allen wrench. The spacers are optional and intended to accommodate different spindle lengths among common commercially available right angle grinders, while still placing the abrasive product of choice safely within the grinder guard.

Once all the components and the accompanying abrasive have been properly mounted, use an Allen wrench to twist the retainer nut and tighten the entire system, locking it into place. 3M™ Flap Disc Holders are commonly used on right angle grinders.

Safety First: Tips for Optimal Performance

As with all abrasives and power tools, it’s important to take safety precautions. Two simple safety measures include using a guard on the right angle grinder and complying with the maximum operating speed.

First, a guard prevents debris from flying and minimizes the risk of injury. As mentioned above, it’s important that the disc be positioned within the guard, to ensure maximum safety and to allow the guard to function as designed. Finally, the maximum operating speed of the tool should be equal to or less than the speed indicated on the abrasive. By abiding by the proper speed, operators reduce the risk of injury and may also prolong abrasive service life.

Firm Attachment

This double-sided pad attaches to the Hookit™ skirt on our 3M™ 3125 nib sander with a brushed nylon loop. The pad has a blue vinyl face with a white nylon loop on the back to hold the 1-¼" PSA backed 3M 466LA abrasive discs. The small, 1¼" diameter head size of the 3125 sander can help you see the exact point to sand, and produces a smaller area to buff out than conventional tools.

Finesse-it™ Buffing System

3M™ Finesse-it™ products are a line of specially engineered abrasives, compounds, polishes, and buffing pads to be used on OEM and baked refinish paints to remove defects, sand scratches, or swirl marks on a variety of painted surfaces. The Scotch-Brite™ Disc Pad is an abrasive accessory that helps connect Scotch-Brite™ Surface Conditioning Discs to right angle grinders with ease. A Great Back Up Pad from Any Angle

Using the Scotch-Brite™ Disc Pad is as simple as threading the pad onto the power tool and then attaching the disc to the pad face. The center pin system contributes to a reduction in hand-arm vibration due to its ability to repeatedly and accurately center the disc on the pad, in comparison to other pads without the center pin feature.

The Scotch-Brite™ Surface Conditioning Discs are made with aluminum oxide or other abrasive minerals and are available in a variety of grades. These discs are commonly used to remove rust, discoloration, and residual sealants. They help clean flat metal parts, prep surfaces after weld seam removal and prep surfaces prior to coating or painting. The reason these discs can prep surfaces so well is because they strike a balance between cut and finish. The abrasive mineral cuts burrs and contaminants while the spongy open web responds to surface imperfections without gouging, marring or damaging the base material. The non-woven, open web, durable construction is designed to resist loading; gaps between fibers allow debris to escape and not clog the disc. Consequently, the service life of the disc increases.

3M Clean Sanding dust-management system features our proprietary multi-hole pattern and evacuates dust from the work surface better than 5- or 6-hole products. Reducing dust dramatically increases the cutting efficiency and life of the disc, which ultimately reduces operating costs. 

Optimized with a self-generated-vacuum sanding tool fitted with a Clean Sanding filter bag (sold separately), our Clean Sanding products allow the vacuum to suction dust from the air and off of the workpiece. This reduces loading of the disc and adds life to the abrasive. Additionally, reducing dust in the air improves working conditions. 3M Clean Sanding abrasives can be paired with Clean Sanding disc pads for use on a central-vacuum-ready sander.

Back-up Pads: 3M™ Stikit™ Disc Pad

3M™ Stikit™ Disc Pads hold 3M Stikit discs for use with disc, random orbital, and rotary sanders. They have a tough vinyl face that provides excellent disc adhesion yet allows quick, easy disc removal. A variety of lightweight, shock-resistant pads are available in 3-, 5- and 6-inch diameters.

The pad face provides strong disc adhesion suitable for higher speed applications, yet enables quick removal without leftover residue.

Our 3M™ Stikit™ system was designed for convenient disc changes between grades or applications. Stikit™ discs come ready to use with a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on the backside so that attaching them to the disc pad is as simple as pressing on a sticker, yet they remove cleanly from a Stikit disc pad. Stikit discs tend to provide a more aggressive cut than do 3M™ Hookit™ products.

3M™ Roloc™ Gasket Removal Disc Pad Assembly includes the backup pad, steel shaft and adapter needed to mount our Scotch-Brite™ Roloc™ Gasket Removal Disc to your power tool. This disc pad is designed to drive our Scotch-Brite™ disc when addressing the delicate task of removing gasket residue without compromising the metal surface.

Gaskets require a clean, smooth, flat surface to seal properly. Old gaskets may stick, flake apart or fail to peel off cleanly. In both 2- and 3-inch diameters, our disc and disc pad are able to get into tight areas and edges to remove imperfections and effectively restore and prepare the surface for another gasket.

The open-web construction of our Scotch-Brite™ abrasive makes it perfect for moderate to heavy stock removal without marring the metal surface. It minimizes heat buildup in use so this disc is ideal for use on steel and aluminum metals. Tough aluminum oxide mineral cuts fast to remove old gasketing quickly, and its small size enables access to tight corners.

Easy Roloc™ Attachment

The 3M™ Roloc™ TR system provides a secure attachment even for heavy-duty applications, and operators can conveniently change wheels or discs with a simple twist-off, twist-on motion.
